Primary and secondary schools nationwide will be celebrating the National Nutrition Month or “Buwan ng Nutrisyon” this coming July. According to the National Nutrition Council (NNC), the theme for this year’s celebration is “Healthy diet, gawing habit – for life!” (“Healthy diet – make it a habit for life!”).
In a statement, NNC explained that the theme aims to achieve the following objectives:
1) Promote the consumption of healthier foods and discourage the eating of unhealthy foods
2) Encourage families and individuals to eat a balanced diet with a variety of food in the right quantity and maintain an ideal body weight to reduce obesity and non-communicable diseases
3) Create awareness among them on making the right choices of food
4) Encourage the food industry, producers, distributors, and farmers to make healthy foods available to all
The theme for Nutrition Month 2017 is “Healthy diet, gawing habit – for life!”
For its part, the Department of Education released a Memorandum #105-2017 which enjoins educational institutions to undertake “meaningful activities which will highlight the importance of good nutrition, healthy diet, and healthy lifestyle.” These activities can include school parades, slogan and poster making contests, essay writing competitions, among others.
The national nutrition month is celebrated every July as stipulated in Presidential Decree 491, which also mandated the creation of NNC in 1974. It must be noted that during that time, then-President Ferdinand Marcos had both executive and legislative powers.

MUNTINLUPA City was recently cited by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) for its outstanding implementation of program management and delivery of services to promote the health of its constituents.
NNC Deputy Executive Director Dr. Azucena Dayanghari lauded Muntinlupa, led by Mayor Jaime Fresnedi, for its ‘very Satisfactory Performance in Nutrition Program Management,’ Most Improved Nutrition Program Management, Best in Program Effectiveness and Most Innovative local government unit (LGU) in the 2017 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony at Novotel Manila, Quezon City on July 28.
Together with the city’s chief executive, Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon, City Health Officer Dr. Magdalena Meana, Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Mauro de Gulan and other city government officials were also present to receive the accolades.
This recognition rite was timely for the national observance of the 43rd Nutrition Month in July, focusing on the promotion of healthy diets with the theme, “Healthy diet, gawing habit – FOR LIFE!” Dayanghari lauded all the LGUs in this year’s awarding for their initiatives to push more inclusive programs to their respective areas of jurisdiction despite rapid urbanization.
Fresnedi attributed the recognition to having an active and fully functional City Nutrition Committee (CNC) based on the NNC’s Local Nutrition Committee Functionality Checklist.
The nutrition interventions implemented by the CNC include “Tamang Timbang Tungo sa Malusog na Kinabukasan” supplementary feeding program, “Pabasa sa Nutrisyon” classes for mothers of undernourished children, Breastmilk Letting Caravan via partnership with private health institutions, and conduct of home visits by Barangay Nutrition Scholars, among others.
These programs contributed to the improving health and nutrition of the city’s citizenry, particularly the children. Statistics showed the prevalence of underweight children aged zero to five years old in Muntinlupa was significantly reduced from 5.07 percent in 2014 to 1.53 percent in 2016.
In other developments, Muntinlupa students won regional Nutrition Month competitions: photo-essay, first place, by Muntinlupa National High School Grade 12 student Janelyn Joyce Paje; and on-the-spot poster making, first place, by Muntinlupa Business High School-Sucat Annex Grade 8 student Jhonathan Bufete.
Every year, the NNC honors LGUs with top scores in the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation aimed at validating the effectiveness of the nutrition and related programs by local nutrition committees.
Nutrition Month is a yearly celebration held every July to create awareness on the importance of nutrition among Filipinos.
Presidential Decree 491 enacted in 1974 mandates the NNC to lead and coordinate the nationwide campaign.
Throughout the years, the Nutrition Month celebration has been institutionalized by schools and LGUs as well as other stakeholders.
